These days the Metal scene is constantly evolving, with new genres and crossovers becoming a regular occurrence it's always refreshing to know that there are still bands out their that don't bend to current trends, that stick to their guns and provide us with some good old British Heavy Metal music. Birmingham's own Heavy Metallers NIGHTBLADE are one such band and with their new album 'Closer To The Threshold' they bring us 10 tracks that combine the classic 70's/80's Metal/Rock sound whilst adding to that a modern edge so that their music appeals to Metal fans of all ages.
The album opens with 'Over My Dead Body' (lead single from the album) a fast paced track with big guitar riffs (Dave Parrish), pounding drums (Rich Lawley), driving bass lines (Billy Fitz) and the ballsy Rock/Metal vocals of front man Mark Crosby, a classic Heavy Metal stormer that's guaranteed to get your heads banging in appreciation. Nightblade draw their influences from bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Black Sabbath which is apparent when listening to the album but added to that are influences from bands such as Alter Bridge which adds to the bands overall sound. The albums title track 'Closer To The Threshold' is both anthemic and infectious with it's heavy chugging guitars, a mid paced song that i'm sure will go down well when played live. There are a few longer tracks on the album which give the band the chance to show off their musical credentials, one such track is 'You'll Always Remain' which opens with a slow Maidenesque type riff before a time change quickens the pace, the guitar work of Dave Parrish is outstanding and he caps that with epic solo mid way through the track.
The bands style changes again with 'Out of Commission', a slower paced rocker which features some psychedelic vocal effects which gives it a distinct 70's feel before the pace picks up with some nice guitar work and a faster vocal passage before another time change slows things down again. Another track of note is 'Devils Advocate', a slow intro which soon gives way to another fast paced stormer with big heavy guitar riffs, driving bass, pounding drums, nice solos and a fist pumping chorus.

'Closer To The Threshold' is a solid second release that see's Nightblade improve on their debut album 'Servant To Your Lair' in many ways, the quality of the song writing, more diversity musically and in terms of the mixing and production of the album which is first class. If you are a fan of 80's style Heavy Metal music then this album will appeal you but that doesn't mean that fans of other genres should overlook it .... this album has something for everyone.

Quality Heavy Metal from a quality band ..... 4/5
